World-Class Institute

HMRI is a world-class institute with 1500 medical researchers, students, and support staff striving to prevent, treat and defeat a multitude of serious illnesses to deliver health and wellbeing to the community. In partnership with the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Local Health District, HMRI’s clinical, biomedical and public health researchers work across multiple campuses and six key translational research programs including:

  • Brain and Mental Health
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular, Pregnancy and Reproduction
  • Public Health
  • Viruses, Infections/Immunity, Vaccines and Asthma (VIVA).

The work the institute does is personal for Walkom Real Estate Director, Scott Walkom.

“My family has supported HMRI since its inception 20 years ago, via my mother Sonia Walkom who was on the Founding Board. Since her death from a rare cancer eight years ago, I have been on the Foundation and then joined the Board five years ago. My wife Gwendalyn and I are donors as well. We support HMRI as it enables world-class medical research to happen in Newcastle and The Hunter, thereby improving the local community and world health.”

Funds raised through sponsorship packages for the Charity Golf Day will help fund medical research and life-saving discoveries at HMRI. Organisers hope that approximately 100 keen golfers will participate on the day and have a modest fundraising goal of $15,000.

The day takes place on the luxurious Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley Golf Course, an 18-hole championship golf course that offers premium facilities, service and unparalleled natural beauty. Attendees will enjoy picturesque lakes, abundant wildlife and stunning views of the Brokenback Mountain Range. It’s a stylish way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day – to be sure.

Packages include 18 holes of golf, the share of a cart, a light breakfast, on-course refreshments and a sit-down lunch at the conclusion of the day. It’s being run as a Covid safe event and there are currently no restrictions once on the golf course. Individual tickets are already sold out but sponsorship packages for four players are still available and include hole sponsorship and corporate logo display opportunities.
