Why You Should Have Contents Insurance As A Tenant

Property Management Tips – Ask Susan

Let me tell you why.

On the morning of 22nd February 2018 a fruit bat decided to swing between two power lines with a hand on each. Not a good idea.

Apart from it’s unfortunate demise approximately 1000 homes in the Maryville, Tighes hill and immediate surrounds experienced a massive power surge resulting in the destruction of many electrical appliances.

For those landlords and tenants who had the appropriate insurance cover it was a relatively easy fix except for the obvious inconvenience of being without power for several hours. As well as being minus fridges, washing machines, tv’s, computers and the like.

One of our tenants only suffered the loss of some of his electrical equipment as he had surge protectors on the big dollar items and came through relatively unscathed. As a result we would suggest to all of our tenants and landlords that it would be a good investment to purchase a surge protector or two.

Tenant should give serious consideration to having contents cover for their belongs as it is not covered under the landlords insurance policy. There is also no obligation on the owner to provide any form of compensation or alternative accommodation.

Some companies that provide content’s insurance include AAMI, Allianz, NRMA and GIO.
